Palestinians: A Nation Divided

Dispossession and Displacement

The United Nations commemorated the mass displacement of Palestinians for the first time on Monday, May 15, 2023.

Origins and History

The term "Palestinian" historically applied to all inhabitants of the British Mandate for Palestine. However, the concept of a distinct Palestinian identity evolved over time.

During the Mandate period, some Palestinian leaders advocated for an independent Palestinian state, while others sought integration with neighboring Arab countries.

Armed Struggle and Jihad

In the face of the British Mandate and the growing presence of Jewish settlers, Palestinian leader Amin al-Husseini called for a "jihad" against both forces.

This armed resistance, known as the "Great Revolt," lasted from 1936 to 1939 and resulted in significant casualties on both sides.

Caught in the Crossfire

Today, the Palestinian people face a complex and challenging reality. In Israel, Palestinian citizens make up around 21% of the population and face discrimination and limited rights.

In the occupied Palestinian territories, Palestinians struggle under Israeli occupation, with restrictions on movement, access to resources, and self-determination.
